Based on a real story about a mother in the ghetto.

The inside has a broken and burned picture frame around his photo and a picture of Opole, his shtetl, surrounded by the tefillin’s leather straps.

On the outside of the box, I have his Yad Vashem testimony page attesting that he was gassed, surrounded by aluminum steal, which represents the technological advance of Nazi Germany. Here, I also have a candle in honor of his soul. The back of the box has Poland’s map and the words of the prayer Yizkor on it. Poland is an enormous Jewish cemetery.

This collage was made in rememberance of the artist’s grandparents, Avrumele and Bayla Rolnik, and aunts who were murdered, in Poland, during the Holocaust. The image is covered by red and black symbolizing fire and destruction. The gate of Aushwitz, with the words: Arbeit Macht Frei (works brings freedom) oversee the map of Poland. The Kaddish, the prayer in honor of the dead, was placed on Poland, since the country is an enormous Jewish cemetery. On the lower left corner, the artist’s grandfather’s home can be seen and a picture of his family was placed upside down.

Inspired by a poem written by a 12 years old Jewish boy who was killed in the Holocaust. This boy wrote that for the seven weeks he had been in the ghetto, he had not seen another butterfly. He missed his freedom and nature.
